Why your business isn't showing up on Google Maps.

You search your own service and your shop isn't there. Here's how Google decides who shows up on the map, and the fixes that actually help.

The short answer

Google picks which businesses to show on the map using three things: how relevant your profile is to the search, how close you are to the person searching, and how prominent your business looks online (reviews, links, mentions). If you're missing from the map, it's usually an unfinished Google Business Profile, a profile that isn't verified, the wrong category, or too few reviews compared with nearby competitors.

First, check that you actually have a profile

Search your exact business name plus your city on Google. If a panel with your name, hours and reviews appears on the right (or at the top on a phone), you have a profile. If not, either it doesn't exist or it was never verified. You can create or claim one for free at business.google.com.

Reason 1: The profile isn't verified

An unverified profile usually won't show up in map results at all. Google verifies by video, phone, text, email or postcard depending on the business. Log in and look for a "Verify" or "Get verified" button. Until that's done, nothing else on this list matters.

Reason 2: The wrong primary category

Your primary category is one of the strongest signals Google uses. A barbershop listed as "Hair salon," or a pressure washing company listed as "Cleaning service," can lose searches it should win. Pick the most specific category that describes your main service, then add a few secondary categories for the rest.

Reason 3: You're searching from too far away

Map results change depending on where the person searching is standing. If your shop is in Flowery Branch and you search "barbershop" from Alpharetta, you probably won't see yourself, and that's normal. Distance is the one factor you can't change. To check fairly, search from near your business, or add the city: "barbershop Flowery Branch."

Reason 4: Not enough reviews

Reviews are part of how Google judges prominence. If the businesses above you have 150 reviews and you have 6, that gap matters. You don't need the most reviews in town, but you need to be in the same range as the businesses you're competing with. We cover how to ask for them in a later guide.

Reason 5: The profile is half finished

Profiles with missing hours, no photos, no services and no description give Google less to match against. Fill in everything: hours, holiday hours, services with short descriptions, a business description, your website link, and at least 10 real photos of your work and your space.

Reason 6: Your name, address and phone don't match everywhere

If Google sees one phone number on your profile, another on Yelp and a third on an old Facebook page, it's less sure which details are right. Make your business name, address (or city, if you hide your address) and phone number identical everywhere they appear.

Reason 7: A suspension or soft filter

Stuffing extra keywords into your business name ("Joe's Barbershop Best Fades Gainesville"), listing a virtual office, or creating duplicate profiles can get a listing filtered or suspended. Use your real business name exactly as it appears on your sign and paperwork.

What to do this week

  1. Confirm your profile is verified.
  2. Check your primary category against the top three businesses that do show up.
  3. Fill in every empty field and upload 10 or more real photos.
  4. Make sure your name and phone match on Google, Facebook, Yelp and your website.
  5. Ask five happy customers for a review.
